But plenty of games shut down within two years, whether out of failure or part of a larger plan for new titles every 2-3 years as standards change. So we see an anniversary event, milking during and around that, then a shutdown notice that its going away within months. Shutting down that soon might expose the company to legal actions, and really just be a waste of resources, so there better be great reason. Generally speaking today, if a game shuts down within a year, it was an abject failure in some major sense. We have to also keep in mind the phases of the industry, from more regularly disposable games with few standouts that survive, to a higher quantity of games (and thus more of them in quantity are disposable) but with more long-standing titles. But its not the days of expecting our library to go poof one day. ![]() Some publishers host only on mobile, always-online and shut down within a year. Some publishers seek good will by making their games DRM-free and accessible for fan patches for continued compatibility on PC. We've just went on extremes as well, over time. The norm is you purchase a game and can have reasonable expectation that it is playable for as long as you'll most likely care to have it playable. You haven't been paying attention at all if you think this is the norm. Get those gems and trade them in for rare collection gifts."Far gone are the days of purchasing a game and it is yours forever.
